Endoscopy

Same-day diagnostic results

What is Endoscopy?

An upper GI endoscopy (gastroscopy) is a procedure in which a thin, flexible camera is passed through the mouth to examine the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It is used both to diagnose conditions and, in many cases, to treat them at the same time without the need for surgery.

Mr Jayanthi specialises in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including novel techniques for treating early cancer and pre-cancerous conditions of the upper GI tract offering Essex patients access to some of the most advanced endoscopic care available in the UK.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed with local anaesthetic throat spray and/or light sedation. A thin flexible endoscope is passed gently through the mouth and guided into the stomach and duodenum. The entire procedure typically takes 10–20 minutes.

For therapeutic procedures including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early cancer and pre-cancerous lesions the procedure may take longer and is tailored to the individual clinical need.

What to Expect

You will need to fast for at least 6 hours before the procedure. If sedation is given, you will need a responsible adult to take you home and should not drive for 24 hours. Most patients receive results and a clear management plan on the same day.

There is typically no overnight stay required. You may experience a mild sore throat for 24–48 hours after the procedure.
