What is Acid Reflux Surgery?
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when stomach acid repeatedly flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, and throat irritation. For patients whose symptoms are severe or no longer controlled by medication, surgery offers a proven, long-term solution.

The Procedure
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is the most commonly performed anti-reflux operation. During the procedure, the upper part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped around the lower oesophagus — reinforcing the natural valve and preventing acid from travelling upwards.
The operation is performed through 5 small incisions under general anaesthesia and typically takes 60–90 minutes. Mr Jayanthi will determine whether a total (360°) or partial fundoplication is most appropriate for your anatomy and symptoms.
What to Expect
Most patients stay in hospital for 1–2 nights. A soft or liquid diet is recommended for 4–6 weeks. You can expect to return to light activities within 2–3 weeks and resume normal life within 4–6 weeks.
The majority of patients experience complete or near-complete resolution of reflux symptoms, significantly reducing or eliminating the need for medication.
Risks & Complications
Potential risks include:
- Temporary difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
- Bloating or gas-bloat syndrome
- Recurrence of reflux symptoms
- In rare cases, need for further intervention
