What is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery also known as weight loss surgery encompasses a range of laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures that help patients with obesity achieve significant, sustainable weight loss and improve obesity-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, and joint disease.

Procedures Offered
Gastric Sleeve (Sleeve Gastrectomy)
Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, reducing capacity and suppressing appetite hormones. Highly effective for long-term weight loss and metabolic improvement.
Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)
A small stomach pouch is created and connected directly to the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach. The gold-standard procedure for significant obesity and metabolic disease.
Gastric Band
An adjustable band is placed around the upper stomach to restrict food intake. A reversible and adjustable option for suitable patients.
Revision Bariatric Surgery
Specialist revision for patients whose previous bariatric procedure requires correction, conversion, or adjustment.
What to Expect
Before surgery, patients undergo a thorough multi-disciplinary assessment including dietetic review, psychological assessment, and medical evaluation. This ensures surgery is the right choice and that you are fully prepared for the lifestyle changes that follow.
Most bariatric procedures are performed as a 1–2 night hospital stay. A staged dietary progression follows from liquids to soft foods to a normal diet over 6–8 weeks. Most patients begin to see significant weight loss within the first 3–6 months.
Risks & Complications
Specific risks for bariatric surgery include:
- Nutritional deficiencies (iron, B12, vitamin D)
- Anastomotic leak
- Acid reflux — particularly following sleeve gastrectomy
- Band slippage (gastric band)
- In rare cases, conversion to open surgery
